Concert Review #7: Stone Temple Pilots & Live

Hey folks, Its Steve, the Classic Rock 98.1 Intern with another review of another stellar show.

This was my last summer stop at the Budweiser Stage in Toronto for a triple shot of 90’s rock nostalgia with Soul Asylum, Live, and Stone Temple Pilots.

Soul Asylum kicked things off with raw energy, opening with ‘Somebody to Shove’ and, of course, closing their set with the iconic ‘Runaway Train’—a haunting reminder of why Dave Pirner and crew’s legacy has stood the test of time. Last time I saw Soul Asylum was in 1993 at the Kingswood Ampitheatre at Canadas Wonderland in a triple bill with the Screaming Trees and the Spin Doctors.

Next up, the band Live took the stage and delivered an emotional punch with their anthems like ‘I Alone,’ sending chills through the crowd. The set reached a high with the whole audience singing along to ‘Lightning Crashes’—an electric moment that hit us all right in the feels. This was the third time seeing Live, the first was the summer of 1993 and then again at the Eden Musicfest in 1994.

Finally, Stone Temple Pilots blew the roof off with a set featuring their 1994 album Purple, performed in its entirety. 30 years later and songs like Vasoline, Big Empty and Interstate Love Song sounding as great as ever- They closed the night with ‘Sex Type Thing,’ and let me tell you, Toronto felt every bit of that grunge-fueled power.

Thanks again Classic Rock 98.1 for an amazing summer of great music!
